Jordan Poole is on fire.

Not long after Poole was in the midst of a debilitating slump — amid valid questions raised about his role and the uncertainty surrounding it — he has been on a mini-tear. The confidence has always been there, but the results of such confidence have been going more toward his and the Warriors’ favor.

Remember when Poole made this face while being interviewed?

In four games since contributing another image to his personal meme cache, Poole has put up the following numbers: 24.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, on 61/59/100 shooting splits and 78.9% True Shooting. Suffice to say, Poole has responded to such questions about dealing with his role with definitive aplomb.

It’s also an answer to those who’ve doubted Poole’s ability to coexist with two other heavy-usage stars in Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. With Thompson in the starting lineup, Poole has been considered his immediate backup. But we haven’t really seen heavy minutes involving all three on the floor together.

The Curry-Thompson-Poole trio has outscored opponents by a whopping 31 points per 100 possessions. The caveat: they’ve only spent a total of 74 minutes on the floor together — which, to be quite frank, is still within the confines of what one can consider small-sample-size theater.

Still, it doesn’t take away from the fact that such a lineup has the potential to be an explosive combination. All three are content — and highly capable — of being off-ball operators. Any one of Curry or Poole can take the ball-handling reins, while the other acts as a floor spacer at minimum and a perpetual motion machine at most.

Thompson, even when he hasn’t been shooting the ball well, is still being defended like he’s one of the greatest shooters of all time. He still draws defenders who overplay/top-lock him, or who stick close to him on the weak-side corner. If defenders are drawn away to tag a roller or help on dribble penetration, Thompson is left open as a result; if they stick to him no matter what, lanes are opened for drives or rolls to the rim.

Add another floor spacer on the floor — say, Andrew Wiggins (41% from beyond the arc) — and an excellent screen setter (e.g., Kevon Looney), and you’ve suddenly got the correct ingredients on the floor that can put defenses in one heck of a bind.

The clip above is simple enough. Looney steps up to set a solid screen that catches Marcus Morris Sr., which gives Poole an open look due to Ivica Zubac dropping back.

You may be thinking to yourself: Why are the Clippers employing drop coverage against this Poole-Looney pick-and-roll? Poole should command at least a screen-level type of coverage because of his ability to drill threes when given all the time in the world.

It’s easy to blame the Clippers for choosing the wrong coverage, but consider what they have to deal with around them:

Spread floor

What the Clippers want to avoid in this situation is being placed in rotation, with a backline that isn’t in any position to defend what comes after a potential trap or hedge of the Poole ball screen. If such a scenario happens, it’s safe to say Looney will get the ball on the short roll and be uncontested on his way to the rim, due to anyone being hesitant to sag off of their assignments.

If anyone does decide to tag or fully help on the Looney roll — say, one of either Nicolas Batum as the low man on the weak side or Reggie Jackson from the strong-side corner (not recommended!) — the Clippers are then left with either Wiggins letting loose from the left corner (51% for the season), or Thompson pulling the trigger with plenty of breathing room in front of him.

(Replace Looney in this situation with Draymond Green — another excellent screener and arguably the greatest short-roll playmaker of all time — and good luck trying to prevent this lineup from scoring.)

Whenever multiple defenders are forced to have to close out on multiple threats on the perimeter — threats who are not only deadly stationary shooters, but also are equally potent as movement shooters — the pick-your-poison scenario is triggered.

This is just unfair:

A defense can only do so much to discourage and limit the amount of looks from the perimeter. The presence of several pressure points can break even the most disciplined of defenses — and as seen above, multiple close outs toward Curry, Thompson, and Wiggins do their job of discouraging them from shooting the ball. But sharp ball movement, patience, and taking advantage of a defense scrambling in rotation eventually creates a gap in the armor.

Another advantage of pairing Poole with one of either Curry or Thompson: playing him off of a Splash Brother’s attention-warping nature to get him some of the easiest looks of his life.

Let’s summarize the clips above:

  1. An “Iverson” cut set for Thompson that gets him on the same side as Poole, who’s stationed in the corner. Thompson, being top-locked, uses the opportunity to make a “45” cut toward the rim, which draws three defenders. Poole then lifts from the corner to the wing for a wide-open three.
  2. A simple “Motion Strong” set (staggered down-screens for a man in the corner), with Poole as the first screener. Batum prepares to receive and switch onto Thompson, but Poole intelligently slips the screen, receives the pass from Curry, and finishes over late help.

The glimpses are already mouth watering, and the possibilities are endless. Add Green to this mix — and an additional stretch four who can space the floor and defend — and it could very well be another small-ball weapon the Warriors can unleash upon unsuspecting defenses.

  1. Peter Belmi, Sora Jun, Gabrielle S. Adams. The “Equal-Opportunity Jerk” Defense: Rudeness Can Obfuscate Gender Bias. Psychological Science, 2022; 095679762110404 DOI: 10.1177/09567976211040495

To highlight the common view that men aren’t deemed sexist when they’re rude to both men and women, researchers asked subjects to share their perceptions of tweets from former President Donald Trump lambasting men and women, fictitious stories of managers’ treatment of male and female employees, and surveys of sexist behavior.

According to the study, being a jerk to men creates “an illusion of impartiality, giving sexist perpetrators plausible deniability.” This can lead people to falsely conclude that gender bias doesn’t underlie rude behavior, making them less likely to recognize sexism.

“We found that a man does not seem sexist if he treats everyone — both men and women — poorly,” said Peter Belmi, associate professor of leadership and organizational behavior at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and lead author of the study. “This is problematic because sexism and rudeness are not mutually exclusive. Men who are sexist can be — and often are — rude toward other men.”

The research shows that gender blindness can be exploited to refute accusations of sexism, he added. For example, perpetrators may highlight instances in which they’ve been rude to men as evidence that they aren’t sexist.

A popular understanding of sexism is discrimination toward women based solely on their sex. Under this definition, a man would not be sexist if he were a jerk to both sexes. The researchers defined sexism more broadly, however, as attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors that reflect, foster, or promote negative or pejorative stereotypes about women.

“Men may believe that rather than ‘supporting women,’ an alternative solution to creating gender parity is to ‘treat everyone horribly,’” Belmi added.

He emphasized that previous research has focused on gender blindness’s benefit in fostering workplace gender diversity and inclusion. The current study highlights the shortcomings of this ideology.

The researchers conducted a series of studies, using online participants and students from professional schools, to determine whether sexism is tougher to recognize when men express rudeness to other men as well as women.

A two-part survey of about 1,100 employed men measured their self-reported rudeness toward male and female colleagues at work and their attitudes and beliefs about women.

Another study asked participants to read tweets written by Trump during his presidency that contained sexist comments about women; some participants also read tweets that berated men.

Next, the researchers asked participants to read a series of stories, some about managers making sexist comments to female workers and others about managers speaking rudely to male subordinates, too. Participants were also asked to identify whether those managers needed gender-bias and anger-management training.

In each experiment, participants failed to recognize sexism when the perpetrator was rude or berating to men. However, they identified sexist behavior when only women were treated poorly. In other words, “equal-opportunity jerks” were viewed as gender blind. Also, the more participants perceived an offender being a jerk to other men, the more they diminished the need for gender-bias training.

“When a sexist manager is rude toward men, it may appear as though he is not sexist,” Belmi said. “Thus, women victimized by his behavior will have a more difficult time proving that he is sexist. Rudeness can therefore protect perpetrators.”

The findings show that rudeness across genders creates a barrier to addressing sexism. The researchers suggested that future studies should examine whether rudeness can conceal other types of discrimination — for example, by creating illusions of colorblindness or authenticity.

“Blatant, unambiguous, and obvious forms of sexist conduct continue to exist,” Belmi said. “Our findings suggest that one reason for their persistence is that observers may not recognize that everyday acts of rudeness can serve as a convenient mask for bias against women.”

In 2007 Zack Snyder helmed the dark and gritty action movie 300, which saw ancient Greece thrown into a bloody war against Persia. In the thriller movie, Gerard Butler takes charge as the Spartan King Leonidas, who defies the words of The Oracle and leads 300 warriors into battle against one of the largest armies in the world. But, with fantastical elements sprinkled throughout the flick, you may be wondering if this ‘historical film’ is actually based on a true story? Spoiler alert– yes, yes it is.

The film 300 begins with a Persian messenger approaching King Leonidas asking for a tribute for the God-King of Persia, Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). However, after his Queen is insulted, and being familiar with the country’s tendency to dominate its neighbours, Leonidas proceeds to kick the diplomat into a giant hole and readies himself for conflict. But fate is not on his side as the corrupt Ephors deliver a prophecy forbidding war, leading him to break tradition and face Persia without his full army. To save his home, Leonidas enlists 300 of Sparta’s best warriors to fight for freedom and Greece’s future.

Although there may be wild inaccuracies, strange goat people, and an army full of monsters in 300, the battle upon which Snyder’s film is centred around is surprisingly very real. The 2000s movie is based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name, which in turn, is based on The Battle of Thermopylae.

The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 B.C and lasted for three days. The conflict was extensively documented by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus and the Sicilian historian Diodorus Siculus. King Xerxes, who was indeed real, amassed a giant army with the hopes of conquering the remaining independent nations of Greece after gaining control of the majority of the Greek Cities. Sparta and Athens joined forces in order to combat Persia, with King Leonidas of Sparta taking 300 of his warriors and slaves to lead the battle.

Thermopylae (which translates to ‘the Hot Gates’) refers to the place in the Malian Gulf on the mouth of the Spercheios River that in the past held a narrow and very strategic strait. This would be where the Spartans stationed themselves, and was how they could battle and win against the overwhelming number of enemies, who couldn’t encircle them during combat. Leonidas and his men experienced many small victories and devastated foes through using this strait– defying all the odds.

But on the second night of the battle, The Greeks’ luck ran out as the Persians discovered a hidden path around their position. Leading 100 troops, Leonidas sought to defend the path; however, as the overwhelming number of enemies encircled his men, the King of Sparta ordered most of his allies to fall back while he sacrificed himself – ultimately providing a rearguard to protect the Greek retreat.

Make no mistake, 300 isn’t a replica of the events from this real-life war. Firstly, Xerxes wasn’t an 11-foot giant with a deep electronic voice. There were no monsters among their enemy’s ranks. In reality, the 300 Spartans were joined by a large number of Greek soldiers, resulting in the King having around 5,000 troops in total (if not more).

It should also be noted that during a video journal released in 2007, it was revealed that 300’s choreographer, Damon Caro crafted fight scenes using Filipino martial arts as a base for all of the action sequences. We have no idea how the Spartans actually fought as there are few historical records bar a few tactics and formations detailing the Spartans’ martial arts around today.

This is Sparta! Best war movies

Ephialtes, the real-life figure often debated as being the reason why the Persians discovered the secret path past the Spartan’s position, was also changed from a regular Malian Greek to a Spartan hunchback outcast in the film. This was obviously a better narrative plot point and added an element of spicy betrayal into the movie. But in reality, a deformed Spartan betrayer wasn’t the cause of Leonidas’ downfall.

300 true story: Gerard Butler kicks an enemy into a hole while yelling

So yeah, the story of 300 is far from historically accurate. But saying that, Snyder’s adaptation of Miller’s novel does manage to capture some more truths besides the events of the Battle of Thermopylae – such as the aspects of Spartan life.

The disturbing obsession with eugenics that the Spartans held back in the day is on full display during the film, as in the movie’s opening shots, we are shown baby skulls and children being examined at a scary altar. Infants were indeed examined in Sparta, and those deemed unfit for the Spartan lifestyle were tragically murdered. Similarly, the coming-of-age ritual seen at the beginning of 300 is also somewhat true.

Scary facts: Best horror movies

Just as 300 showcases when detailing Leonidas’ childhood, young Spartan boys did have to leave their families for a training regime known as the ‘Agoge’. However, 300 again slightly deviates from full fact here. In the film, we see Leonidas kill a wolf, but in reality, it was a little more brutal, as Spartans would suffer physical and mental punishment if their mentors caught them stealing food to survive.

Although the film does somewhat idealise the Spartan warrior myth, it also doesn’t shy away from exploring certain aspects of the historical period, no matter how disturbing, so we have to give it some points for its historical efforts, right? (even if it does make you question humanity.)

300 true story: Spartan warriors getting ready for battle

The real-life King Leonidas, just like in the movie, also went to consult with the Oracle at Delphi before proceeding to war. And just like in the film, the oracle gave the King bad news, saying that a king would lose his life or Greece would fall. So again, Snyder and Miller managed to respect some historical accuracy in the wildly entertaining story that we saw on the big screen.

But, let’s make one thing clear: 300 is not a history lesson, and it doesn’t try to be. Snyder fully leans into Miller’s graphic novel, showing mysticism and fantasy throughout his movie. But, magic and monsters aside, 300 is based on heavily documented historical events and does evoke enough truth to make you want to probe deeper into the facts behind its script.

He’s probably best known for his role as Des Courtney on the CBC series Republic of Doyle, and now Mark O’Brien is stretching his acting chops in a new gig on an American television series.

O’Brien has been cast as a character on the AMC drama, Halt and Catch Fire

He said landing the role couldn’t come at a better point in his career, particularly since Doyle‘s finale aired in December.

Best known from his role as Des on Republic of Doyle, Newfoundland actor Mark O’Brien has just been cast on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire. 7:19

“It’s an interesting time for an actor,” he said during an interview with the St. John’s Morning Show

“It’s pilot season, a great time to meet casting directors and kind of show who you are, and what kind of actor you are, so that they can be aware of you for future things. But I was interested in doing something that was already shooting,” he said.

For six seasons, Mark O’Brien played the role of Des Courtney on CBC’s Republic of Doyle. (CBC)

“I really like the show, I think it’s a really cool part. It’s already had a season and got really good critical reviews. AMC is huge, it’s one of my top networks. I think they take risks … and they really stand by their shows, like Mad Men, Breaking Bad.”

O’Brien has been cast in four episodes of Halt and Catch Fire‘s second season. Shooting has been taking place in Atlanta, GA.

The series is set in the early 1980s, in the halcyon days of the computer tech revolution.

O’Brien’s character, Tom Rendon, is a savvy IT department head at a law firm, who has a passion for gaming.

I come in and become a whiz … a brilliant technical wizard. Everyone is making online games and connecting the world through computers for the first time,” he said.

“But at the same time, he’s not really your typical technical guy. He’s very preppy, [a] very put-together guy, a clean-cut guy, which is what interested me. Not every tech wizard is like a nerdy, geeky kind of guy. I thought it was a really interesting take on that.”

O’Brien said while his Doyle character Des was a bona fide, gadget-wielding techie — he is not.

“On Doyle, Des was super into that, and this guy is into that too,” he said.

“I loved games growing up. It’s cool, we get to play with lots of stuff. A lot of the props, we’ve got the old Atari, we have 2,600 tapes lying around. There are references to Nintendo, so it’s really cool. My interests don’t really line up with my characters – yet again,” he said.

Missing home and ROD withdrawal

O’Brien said since Republic of Doyle concluded, the cast has stayed in touch. In fact, O’Brien said he recently spent some time in Dublin with ROD alum, Seán McGinley, who played Malachy Doyle on the show.

‘I really like the show, I think it’s a really cool part. It’s already had a season and got really good critical reviews.’  – Actor Mark O’Brien on his role in AMC’s  Halt and Catch Fire

He called Doyle “an institution.”

“In Newfoundland, it’s something we were all so comfortable with, to the point we were getting to know fans personally. We really came into people’s homes with that show,” he said.

“I think this summer is going to be odd, because that’s when we would normally shoot again. I don’t get to go home for six months straight, which is what I got to do every year. I loved that. You just assume you’re going home because you’ve done it for so long.”

O’Brien said his time on Republic of Doyle was invaluable, and landing the role of Des at the age of 24 was “perfect.”

“It couldn’t have been better timing. I had done quite a bit of theatre and a decent amount of film and TV, but really not a whole lot,” he said.

“I was surrounded by such open people on that show. I learned so much … I was constantly asking questions. The greatest way to learn is by trying things, and that show let me learn so much. I think Doyle did that for me in spades.”

Alumni Horizon Award

O’Brien said he hasn’t been back to the province in four or five months, and is eager to get home to see family and friends.

“Any reason to come back! I am hoping to get home for the MUN Alumni Awards. They honoured me with the Alumni Horizon Award, so I’m hoping to come back if I can get time off shooting,” he said.

“Being down here, it’s just so far away  I miss home a lot.”

O’Brien has been nominated for two Canadian Comedy Awards in the last three years for his work as Des on Republic of Doyle.
