Same. But different. But still same.

Artists, blockchain experts, collectors, investors and even laymen have only one word in their mouths: NFT. For the record, NFTs are “non-fungible tokens” that work a bit like cryptocurrencies. They make it possible to certify the authenticity of virtual collectibles. NFTs alone brew millions of dollars. They are also on the way to becoming the greatest good currently circulating on the Internet. They are gradually attracting major international brands like Sega. The Japanese video game development and publishing company’s NFTs are coming to market soon!

NFTs make it rain or shine

Like the aroma of an irresistible meal, the NFT arouse the interest of major brands in the world of video games. For example, the National Basketball Association (NBA) recently launched a series of NFTs called NBA Top Shots. These have a crazy success, currently, and sell for thousands of dollars each!

Following this trend, several video game developers like Ubisoft and Square Enix have already made inroads into this world. We can therefore say that the Japanese house Sega has made itself desired. Indeed, she had posted a statement on Twitter saying that she would only go down this road on the condition that it was not a money-making scam or fake buzz.

The impressive evolution of the NFT market proves that these doubts were unfounded. It is therefore very likely that Sega is about to take its first steps into the world of NFTs. The brand Sega NFTs that everyone is talking about confirms this idea!

Sega has the potential to capitalize on this opportunity

The popularity of the NFT and video game markets is proof that the alliance of these two sectors has real opportunities to offer. And Sega being one of the biggest publishers and developers of video games, there is no doubt that it has the template to seize them. The lucrative possibilities are endless when it comes to NFTs for this developer with unparalleled creativity.

But again, it all depends on the publishers. They announced that they are still a little reluctant. This kind of apprehension is normal. Indeed, the NFT market, and the cryptocurrency market, has grown at an astounding rate, even according to expert opinion. Some parameters about it are still imprecise.

However, this is not a sufficient reason to refuse to start. Especially since Sega enjoys a favorable reputation among gamers and fans. The next game Sonic, Sonic Frontiers, is still under development and its history is entrusted to the famous author Ian Flynn. With such cards, one can be almost sure that the products of the brand Sega NFTs are going to make a splash!

In short, NFTs are in the crosshairs of video game developers. The Japanese publisher Sega, despite its reluctance, seems to be interested in it as well. It is hoped that his reluctance will diminish and that he will embrace the sector with more fervor.

Future cible : Square Enix ?

dj boy is a little known title. Released only in Japan in arcades, it benefited from an adaptation the same year on Mega Drive. Even on this 16-bit medium, there remains an unknown game that we will not find on any compilation or best of of the Sega machine. That’s a shame.

Going back to this arcade opus, it was released in early 1990, a few months later. finalfight, and in the same time slot as Moonwalker or Golden Axe. Suffice to say that the competition was fierce if we add the Dual Dragon and other beat ’em ups that have gone down in history.

Finally, know that Kaneko developed another similar title in 1992: B.Rap Boys, which takes up the concept of beat them all with moving scrolling, where our character is this time on a bicycle. Between the title and the means of locomotion, one could almost see in it a spiritual continuation of dj boy.

What is this game worth Kaneko and what does it offer different from the console version? Verdict below.

DJ Boy feat. Michael Jackson

Before the title screen of the game which appears as graffiti, you see a character dressed as Dracula and bats warn dj boy with a slightly strident and not necessarily super clean voiceover. Be that as it may, we say to ourselves that we have our villain from the game, that this cursed Dracula is going to kidnap our dear sweetheart and that we will have to rescue her at the risk of our lives. Ultimately, it is nothing.

As you will be able to discover over the course of the game, this demonic character will never appear in the game and we suddenly wonder why this introduction…

It is by pressing Start that we discover the true story of our hero. Forget the girlfriends to rescue, here the scenario is quite different. The game starts with our character dancing to a hip-hop choreography in the middle of the street. We see on his left another character who looks like Mickael Jackson in SD version, dressed in the famous red leather suit of Thriller. This tribute to the King of Pop will be found particularly in the game, especially at the end of each level where our dj boy begins to dance by performing a choreography close to what Mickael Jackson could do. It’s hard not to see multiple tributes there.

To come back to the scenario, while DJ Boy waddles on the screen, a group of hooligans shows up, visibly annoyed by the music, and steals our hero’s stereo before fleeing with it. Neither one nor two, DJ Boy sets off in pursuit with his rollerblades.

You will have understood, here the title DJ Boy takes on its full meaning, our character being a fan of sound systems and the pursuit of enemies being justified with our rollerblades to catch up with them.

Once we have said that, we say to ourselves that the game will end once we have identified the gang responsible for this shameful theft, we have taught the big boss a good lesson and recovered our state-of-the-art Hifi system . Well no. In fact, the levels will follow one another without any real consistency between them, the last one taking place in the Far West for example, and the last boss will be made up of two big mamas karatekas who are throwing stones at us. We face them for a reason that I don’t know and comes the end staff without any explanation, unrelated to the stolen Hifi or the character of Dracula seen during the intro. I thought there must be a hidden boss, a secret level to try to understand the delirium, but I found nothing.

In short, the developers have made a game that ultimately has neither head nor tail and where it will not be necessary to think too much.

In this its conversion on Mega Drive will bring a real script construction all in a welcome comics style.

Minimalist gameplay but on rollerblades

DJ Boy is therefore still a beat them all with horizontal scrolling but with the particularity that our hero rides around on rollerblades. The scrolling therefore constantly advances except during bosses or a few areas where you will have to face a horde of enemies. This gives a certain originality to the game because the beat them all of this style are not legion. From memory I could quote Eight Man on Neo-Geothat’s all…

In addition to this ability to be always on the move, our hero can punch, kick, and jump kick. Pressing both buttons gives a slightly more powerful blow. Nothing else. You cannot use weapons.

However, contrary to what we could see on the Mega Drive version, when you hammer your fists or feet, our character performs a series of blows, like a sort of combo. It already brings a little more visual and gives more credibility to the whole.

We also notice that your enemies can catch you if you stay too still. Another enemy will then rush at you. Too bad we can’t do it also against them, especially with two players.

Because yes, here, the two-player mode does exist. You embody exactly the same character but instead of being dressed in an orange jacket and cap, he is in red. Another difference, at the end of each level, each character performs a different choreography from the other player to mark the victory.

We would have liked choices of playable characters, but we will have to be satisfied with our DJ Boy only.

Finally, know that a credit = 4 lives, and that you recover points by breaking some objects (very rare) or by killing enemies and bosses. The offered lives come relatively easily and it is therefore not impossible to finish the game without losing credits, which is rare for an arcade game.

Average technique

Kaneko is a small box that has never shone with exceptional arcade games. Apart from a few successes of esteem such as the Gal PanicsAir Buster or Jackie Chantheir titles are nice but visually in the low average of what we could find.

DJ Boy is no exception to the rule, even if the arcade game is well above the Mega Drive version developed a few months later.

You will go through five levels in total. The first four will be taken up on Mega Drive with, in order, the city and its tram, the metro, the construction site and the casino. They will, however, have more diversity in the settings, as our character evolves as he races on rollerblades through the changing landscape.

The fifth level is specific to the arcade cabinet with a stage in the far west, with desert, cacti and mountains on the program.

Except in the construction site where there is a tiny bit of verticality, all levels are strictly linear, with very few obstacles in your path, oil puddles to avoid or holes.

The enemies are quite numerous with sprites of all sizes, which brings a little diversity to the whole. You still have the hooligans on rollerblades, the dwarfs in suits and ties, the clowns on their tricycles, the cheerleaders, and other perfectly identifiable enemies.

The same goes for the bosses that you will find for the most part on the Mega Drive version. For example the Big Mama, who here is much more stereotyped than in the console version, especially in her “KO” posture. Clearly a character who could be controversial, just like the tall white men in bare-chested leather suits and their whips, or the tramps with a long raincoat, or even the bodybuilder in tight underpants. Just as many characters which would be very difficult to put in a game today and which perhaps explain why we do not find this arcade machine outside of Japan.

A boss is unique to the arcade game: the metal rock band in the casino level. Too bad they didn’t take it back on Mega Drive, because it’s the most successful for my taste.

Visually, the game offers a color palette consistent with the proposed environments with nice decors even if it lacks life, parallel scrolling or animations in general. Everything remains a little frozen and arch seen.

Note, however, the animation of the character well broken down, much more than the console version.

Finally level soundtrack, the game offers rhythmic music that stick well to the game but we will quickly forget. Mr Watanabe who was in charge of this soundtrack part, is also the only one to have participated in both the arcade version and the console version.

Conclusion

DJ Boy is a minimalist game. If we put aside the fact that it is done with a scrolling which advances continuously and that our hero is on rollerblades, we remain in the low average level of the beat them all of the time. The two-player mode brings a little more essential compared to its console opus, and its atypical atmosphere makes it a game a little apart.

Once we said that, beat ’em all lovers will appreciate a little history to complete their video game culture and move on quickly.

As long as going into total delirium, Kaneko should have let go completely by offering more levels, even more barred enemies and a little diversity in the courses. In this the very little known B.Rap Boys will fill a lot of gaps dj boywithout being a grandiose game…

Game News Sonic: A new game already in development even before the release of Sonic Frontiers?

While all eyes are on Sonic Frontiers, the next game in the saga, a new title featuring the hyper-speedy blue hedgehog already appears to be in development according to a job posting. However, that might not necessarily be what fans expected.

Summary

Sonic, still so fast?

Lately, Sonic has been making a lot of noise for a video game character born in the 90s. It must be said that the blue hedgehog was very present in the news between the release of his second film at the cinema at the beginning of the year and the announcement of a series and new projects arising from it. But more recently, if we were treated to yet another compilation of several games with Sonic Origins, it was above all Sonic Frontiers that unleashed the passions. Indeed, very quickly, the players expressed their dissatisfaction with the gameplay and the technique, to which the producers responded strongly, which did not help matters.

If the title is for the moment rather discreet, we are still waiting for a release date while the title is still planned for this year. Nevertheless, according to some leaks and rumors, the title is currently scheduled for November 8but as usual, better wait for an official confirmation before getting excited.

Post-Sonic Frontiers already in the works?

Sonic: A new game already in development even before the release of Sonic Frontiers?

But while Sonic Frontiers is catching the attention of all Sonic fans around the world, it seems that another blue hedgehog project is already in development at one of SEGA’s branches. In effect, according to a job offer posted on the GamesIndustry.biz site, therefore a recognized site in the field, SEGA Hardlight, a British studio, was looking for a Lead Artist for a new Sonic game. When we read the proposal in more detail, we learn that it would be a question of working on “a new narrative platformer, exciting and ambitious“and that this post would aim to”to help the artistic vision and the in-house artistic team to produce high quality works“. More concretely, it is “create highly compelling artwork that meets the visual and technical requirements of the game while serving as a benchmark for artistic excellence and professional ethics“.

Sonic: A new game already in development even before the release of Sonic Frontiers?

However, the other important information to remember from this job offer is above all the platform on which this new title is developed and if you know SEGA Hardlight, you won’t be too surprised about what happens next. In effect, we can read “You will understand the limits of a mobile game while pushing the quality to the level of console games“. And yes, the British studio has already worked on Sonic games but for iOS and Android. Thus, it is to them that we owe most of the blue hedgehog games on mobiles such as Sonic Dash, Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Sonic Jump, Sonic Jump Fever or even Sonic Racing.

Thus, this announcement may disappoint some who were expecting a sequel to Sonic Mania, the retro platform game that was unanimous with players and the press. It remains to be seen when this new project will be formalized to see if we will be entitled to a new runner, an infinite jumping game or a different proposal..

Game News Xbox: A former leader looks back on the Console Wars against PlayStation and makes revelations!

The console war, here is a phrase that will speak to JV forumers, but also to long-time players. Atari against Mattel, Nintendo against SEGA, Sony against Xbox, these oppositions have made video game history, polarizing players, defending their console and their favorite games. But was it organized?

Once the video game crack of 1983 was absorbed into a fledgling industry, they weren’t more than a few to be able to offer large-scale consoles and strong licenses. There was SEGA versus Nintendo, Sonic versus Mario, and then PlayStation got in on the action. crushing everything in its path, Sony’s console created a new paradigm, into which Microsoft then entered with his Xbox. Dismissed from the game after the Dreamcast, SEGA let Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft compete. After the relative commercial failure of the GameCube, Nintendo abandons its technical ambitions to focus on innovative experiences: the Wii, the WiiU, the Switch.

The PS3 / 360 duel: a long-term battle

After an initial skirmish during the Xbox/PS2 generation, which saw Sony’s console become the best-selling machine to date, we stacked up with the PS3 and the Xbox 360. When it was released, the PS3, which was too expensive, struggled to enter homes. Microsoft takes advantage of this and powers the Xbox 360which will meet with great success despite the famous and terrible problem of Red Ring of Death. The PS3 will gradually catch up to end its existence very slightly ahead of its competitor.

During this whole period, the players defended their machine, boasting on the one hand free online, on the other the blu-ray player, while some opposed the catalog of games. The heated discussions have become commonplace, but, if they still exist today, Console War tends to fade. But in the minds of the general public, the Console Wars is fueled by hordes of fansnot always very objective.

A duel created and maintained by the manufacturers?

And if this opposition had been maintained by the builders themselves? According peter moorethe former boss of the Xbox branch of Microsoft, yes ! At the helm of the brand from 2003 to 2007, he participated in the launch of the Xbox 360, the objective of which was no longer to attempt entry into the market, but to establish itself there. In the Front Office Sports podcast, Peter Moore claimed that this idea of ”war” between the Xbox 360 and the PS3 was hiswith the objective of stimulating the market:

We encouraged the console war. Not to create division, but to stimulate each other. When I say each other, I mean Microsoft and Sony. If Microsoft hadn’t continued this momentum after the Red Ring of Death story, the gaming world would be dimmer and we wouldn’t have the competition we have today.

Xbox: A former leader looks back on the Console Wars against PlayStation and makes revelations!

In other words, the console war has been maintained in order to make this dramatic Red Ring of Death forget, and to continue in a commercially aggressive way installing the Xbox brand. The idea was therefore not to create a real opposition between the communities, but to praise the merits of the product in order to broaden the customer base. The former Xbox boss had even tattooed the names of games to be announced at an E3 to score.

Ancient history?

The backlash took place at E3 2013 when Xbox One and PS4 retail prices are announced, when Sony had parodied the game loan, after Don Mattrick had unfortunate remarks about the connection to the Internet. Today, communication still serves this objective of attracting customers, but passes more by the proposal of varied and accessible services than by a frontal opposition between the excluded and the consoles. The development of cross-play, cross-platform, the development of services and multi-platforms are increasingly blurring the boundary between the major manufacturers, and reduce the phenomenon.

Of course, there are still enthusiasts who defend body and soul their favorite brand, but the industry plays much less directly on it with more complementary actors. As a reminder, Peter Moore, after leaving Microsoft, is became president of EA Sport before taking the reins of Liverpool FC then Unitywhere he still works today.

business news Xbox: Sony on alert after the takeover of Activision and Call of Duty by Microsoft

There are the rhetoric and the reality behind it. At the beginning of the year, Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard was such a shock wave that the giant Microsoft’s competitors inevitably reacted internally to establish a strategy aimed at countering such a behemoth. If the interested parties showed a certain phlegm to display their serenity, certain information tends to prove that the announcement was experienced as an earthquake. And this isn’t the first time this has happened…

A sense of deja vu

Twenty years ago, when SEGA decided to leave the world of console manufacturers, the publishers communicated by welcoming the now new publisher with welcome messages. But for some, like Electronic Arts, it was window dressing. Because the moment SEGA announced its intention to become one of the main publishers, the new competitors simply organized crisis meetings! And the American publisher went even further by writing a salty letter to the attention of the high authorities of Wall Street. Clearly, the displayed smile hid real fears. Today, history is repeating itself with a firm much more powerful than SEGA was in its time.

Sony fears the rise of Xbox

This information is far from coming out of nowhere. As you know, Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard has been confirmed by interested parties, but is still pending before competition regulators around the world. If the transaction has been confirmed, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard must wait for the return of the various commissions to release the champagne. And precisely the Brazilian commission that interests us here. The latter has hired the services of a law firm whose objective is to verify, point by point, the ins and outs of this mammoth-sized acquisition. Via a series of questions / answers organized with the giants of the sector, they have established a report in Portuguese which has just been made public. And when we look at the case of Sony, some answers are far from going unnoticed. See instead:

Creating a high-end AAA game (like Activision’s Call of Duty) requires a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of employees. Competitors of Microsoft and Activision, in terms of game development and publishing, include SIE, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, Epic Games, Riot Games, Warner Brothers Interactive, Rockstar and Take-Two (owner of Rockstar and 2K ). Nevertheless, apart from Activision, there are few developers/publishers capable of producing AAA games like EA (FIFA), Take-Two/Rockstar (Grand Theft Auto) and Epic Games (Fortnite). These games tend to be long-running franchises with big budgets, multi-year development cycles, and heavy followings. And despite big budgets and resources, none of these developers could create a franchise that would rival Activision’s Call of Duty, which stands out as a category of games in its own right.

By these few lines, we discover that Sony takes the Call of Duty franchise very seriously, which is an important part of its catalog, and possibly fears a future exclusivity of it at Xbox.

Xbox: Sony on alert after the takeover of Activision and Call of Duty by Microsoft

And the sequel is even more edifying since it is about Xbox Game Pass.

Over the past five years, Microsoft’s Game Pass has grown to represent 60-70% of the global subscription services market. This share is even higher in Brazil, where Game Pass accounts for around 70-80% of the PC subscription services market. When Microsoft announced that it would acquire ZeniMax in 2020, Game Pass had around 10 million subscribers. Even if each subscriber purchased the cheapest subscription ($10 per month), that equates to over $1.2 billion in annual subscription revenue. As the graph below shows (Editor’s note: in the document presented to the lawyers), when Microsoft announced that it would acquire Activision in 2022, Game Pass was at 25 million subscribers – a 38% increase since January 2021 — doubling its annual Game Pass subscription revenue to at least $3 billion.

Reading between the lines, we understand that Sony fears the rise of Microsoft and the Xbox Game Pass. The manufacturer realizes that the increase in subscribers is pronounced and that it will not go down. A little further on, the report points out that this rise in power coincides with the interest in content made possible by the acquisition of numerous studios: Double Fine, Obsidian Entertainment, Ninja Theory and even Bethesda. And that with Activision, the content would be greatly improved.

Obviously, the remarks are posed and do not reveal, in appearance, any stress. But just like SEGA and the rhetoric of “ex-partners”, it’s obvious that the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is not taken lightly by Sony – especially if Call of Duty, able to sell consoles by pallets whole, joins the bosom of Microsoft in an exclusive way. It will be interesting to see how the Japanese company responds to new challenges in the coming months and years. The first answer was given by the arrival of Extra and Premium subscriptions and the second could well bear the mark of a certain PlayStation VR2.

It was in my opinion the golden age of video games (was it because I was a teenager?)

Indeed, the MD and the Super Nes gave way to a new type of game: 3D games.
For all players, 3D was the ecstasy of video games, something that was almost unthinkable, we couldn’t imagine what future games might look like… So many dreams, many imaginations (virtual helmets ) and above all a huge competition!

For its part, Capcom and SNK continued in 2D, but revolutionized it! Indeed, 2D would never have been more beautiful without these two giants…

In short, a magnificent era, many competitors, no monopoly yet, but a very noticeable absence from Nintendo.

Too bad that later Sega (like the other competitors) could not keep up with the marketing level (due to much weaker funding) compared to Sony.
We also entered a new area that the video game had until been spared: that of business, money and money, partly because of the newcomer: Sony…

When I would have understood how to put them, I would not hesitate, but you know me, me and computers… (and this despite the tutorial)

Beautiful era certainly (I had a playstation), it was the beginnings of 3D. It sucked but the transition from 2d to 3d was difficult for many players.
Good god the download times were long, a real shock at the time and it still annoys me so much today. I prefer cartridges.

I find that these first 3d games have aged a lot (it’s pixelating to death like sega rally GBA yuck!) and I find the 2d 8 and 16 bit games much prettier.

In any case it was for me the era of the first really good car games (gran turismo and colin mcrae rally for which I had specially bought the console).
Very good memories.

Bravo for the presentation of these consoles.

ARF!! Watch out, Bullitt! The Playstation is still taboo… And if today I manage to pronounce its name, and this name still inherits us a lot, us, owners of the marvelous Sega Saturn at that time! (Of course, take this thought seriously, but I shouldn’t tell you, we’re not going to get angry in the OS family!)

Well don’t tell me about it that at the time I went from my megadrive to the ps1 I’m sick of it.

It was cheaper and all my friends had one, yet I swore to myself to be faithful to Sega.

A youthful mistake, forgive me!

Yeah super generation. One of the regrets I have about this generation is that ultimately there was never really a 3-way fight (saturn, playstation and N64) whatever the market. That’s a shame.
Otherwise I particularly appreciated the N64 (mainly for fun and its incredible multi).

And yes there are no photos.

Yeah its lack of photo but it’s well done ^^

The photos will arrive when I have time…

Well…I didn’t know there were so many consoles, I knew most of them (Hyper NeoGeo, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, PS1, N64 and Saturn). Thanks to you Enkhyl I will go to bed less stupid tonight  (plus it’s really detailed even if there are no pictures…)

I’ll try to post pics tomorrow

Cool Enkhyl. I was totally in love with the V1 topic.

And worse, I have some doc

Very busy time indeed! Nice file well complete as it should Enkhyl
This typical pixelated 3d of the moment had a charm that has now been lost I find, today it’s all smooth or full of bloom, yuck not good. for me, titles like Panzer Dragoon Saga or Xenogears still surpass current titles.

From that time I didn’t know anything about the Saturn (already dead when I landed), but super well suited for the N64 (which I had).
I must admit that 1998 to 2002 was a huge period in terms of gaming, mainly with the playstation/N64 duel and then the arrival of the Dreamcast.
Really on top.

Otherwise I repeat what I said since V1, the saturn had nothing to fight against the playstation in Europe, since these idiots reserved the best games for Japan. Pfff I will never understand that…

Disagree, the best games were in Japan, but in Europe, some permissions still appeared

Yeah but not enough to make Sony falter while remaining a minimum objective…
Yes there were pearls but in proportion to the Jap hits it’s derisory (and a shame).

It’s your point of view, I don’t share it, even if I understand it

We would like to thank the writer of this write-up for this incredible material

Nothing beats using an old-style controller to play retro games, whether on the original hardware, a Raspberry Pi, or even an emulator. Make sure you get the best retro gaming experience with one of our recommendations.

What to Look for in a Retro Gamepad in 2022

There are so many video game systems to choose from that the “perfect” controller doesn’t exist. If you want an authentic retro gaming experience, you’ll generally want to go for a controller that replicates the feel of playing retro games on the old system.

Starting with the NES console generation, the controller has become relatively standardized. If your general interest in retro gaming is from that era, it’s possible to buy a single gamepad that adequately covers multiple systems.

This includes modern controllers you already have, but modern controllers have one major flaw that makes them less than ideal for retro gaming. Specifically, they tend to have soft D pads.

Most retro games make extensive use of the D-pad to control gameplay. Modern games use the D-pad for tasks such as using items or switching between game modes, and n don’t need to be so precise. Therefore, a good retro controller must first have a precise and precise D-pad with good feedback.

Then you have to check compatibility. Most modern retro controllers work with anything Bluetooth or USB, but only a few controllers are compatible with original hardware. In this article, we’re not specifically looking at controllers for use with original consoles, but some offer this option as a bonus.

Finally, the layout and quality of the buttons are essential. If you want to play a game designed for a controller with six buttons, using a controller with only four can be a problem. The buttons should also be comfortable enough and give good feedback. In retro games, button presses tend to be more frequent and intense, so any controller should withstand this.

In an effort to make retro gaming as good and authentic as possible, let’s take a look at some of the best retro-style controllers you can buy.

Best retro controller: 8Bitdo Pro 2

If you don’t have the budget to buy multiple retro-style controllers, then the 8Bitdo Pro 2 is the one we recommend. It has all the controls for retro games up to the modern era of 3D, where analog sticks made their appearance.

While it doesn’t have the six-sided buttons that fans of Genesis or fighting games would prefer, it does come with two additional rear buttons, so you can compensate for that when mapping buttons for those titles. These back buttons can also be useful in games that put a lot of strain on your fingers, but for which you don’t want to resort to a turbo function that would result in multiple key presses.

Unfortunately, the design of the 8Bitdo controller doesn’t match any particular retro console, so if you’re looking for a controller that matches your console’s aesthetic, you might be a little disappointed. However, the Pro 2 makes up for it with modern grips, making it more comfortable than most controllers that strictly adhere to old-school design.

The Pro 2 is officially compatible with Switch, PC, macOS, Android, Steam and Raspberry Pi.

Best budget retro controller: 8Bitdo SN30

The 8Bitdo SN30 SNES-style controller lacks the analog sticks, rumble, and extra shoulder buttons of the SN30 Pro, but it comes at a significantly lower price. The SN30 uses a proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless standard which allows it to work wirelessly with original SNES or modern SNES reproductions such as analog Super NT.

That means this cheap retro controller doesn’t have native Bluetooth. If you want to use the SN30 Pro with another system, you will need to connect it with a USB wire. But it does ensure compatibility with a wide range of devices while providing a way to play with your original SNES.

The design of the original SNES controller was already great, but the SN30 manages to retain what made it special while giving it just the right amount of polish for modern gamers. The old-school semi-transparent plastic is a nice touch.

If you don’t care about wireless connectivity with the original SNES or SNES compatible consoles, the wired version of the SN30 Pro is a better alternative. It costs the same price and offers all the features of the SN30 Pro, but without a battery or wireless function.

According to our research, the SN30 should be compatible with any device that can use controllers via USB.

Best Wired Retro Controller: Retro-Bit Sega Saturn USB Controller

Having a wireless controller is a nice modern convenience, but the best latency and responsiveness are yet to be found with wired controllers. Most wireless controllers you can buy also allow you to use a wired connection, but if you’re only using it wired, why pay for a battery and Bluetooth radio that you’ll never use?

The official Sega Saturn USB controller from Retro-Bit is a reproduction of one of the most respected controllers in history. The original six-button Genesis controller was already popular, but the Sega Saturn version refines it into something even more comfortable. So whether you want to play Genesis or Saturn games, the Saturn controller is the best choice.

This wired USB version controller obviously won’t work with an original Saturn, but Retro-Bit does offer a wireless model with a Saturn connector. If you want to play on an original Genesis, you will have no choice but to opt for the Genesis model with the original connector. Whichever model you choose, it will come with a generous 10-foot cable.

Although it is a quality replica of the Saturn controller, it is no less modern. In particular, you can switch the controller between modern Xinput standards and old Dinput standards, so it should work with new and old titles on PC.

This controller is officially compatible with the Sega Genesis Mini, Switch, PS3, PC, Mac, Steam, RetroPie and Raspberry Pi.

Best NES-Style Controller: 8Bitdo N30 Bluetooth + 8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter

The original NES controller was never the pinnacle of ergonomics, but nothing beats an authentic rectangular controller for playing those classic 8-bit games. The 8Bitdo N30 Bluetooth Gamepad is one of the best modern NES controllers, taking the iconic design and improving it. However, there is a small catch: it is designed specifically for use with the Nintendo Switch.

However, as with any Switch controller, it will work just fine with other systems that support Bluetooth controllers – but we’ve seen mixed reports of results when it comes to latency using Bluetooth over a wide range. range of 8Bitdo controllers.

This problem is solved by also purchasing the 8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter 1. It works with all 8Bitdo Bluetooth controllers and solves all latency and compatibility issues. You can even use it with the original NES when combined with the 8Bitdo Retro Receiver for the original NES.

8Bitdo also periodically releases new firmware for controllers (including the N30) to fix issues such as lag and disconnections, so it might be worth trying out the controller with the latest firmware before assuming you have that too. need the receiver to get the most out of it.

More importantly, why go to so much trouble converting this Switch-centric controller to work with other systems? That’s because we think it’s the best modern interpretation of an NES-style controller. The N30 is more comfortable than other NES controllers, adds two shoulder buttons, has two turbo buttons, and has excellent build quality.

Besides the need to buy extra dongles, the other main downside is that you can only use it with NES games, since the front two turbo buttons can only be used as turbo buttons, not extra buttons. needed for games from other consoles.

The N30 should work with any Bluetooth device that supports Switch controllers, but you’ll need the extra dongle for seamless compatibility with PCs and Raspberry Pi.

Best SNES-style controller: 8Bitdo SN30 Pro

The SN30 Pro takes everything the SN30 does well and improves on it. With analog sticks and four shoulder buttons, this controller has the same inputs as a modern gamepad, making it very versatile. You can play your SNES games with the classic controls or mix things up using the thumbsticks.

Even better, the SN30Pro can also double as a standard modern controller, saving you the hassle of making multiple purchases if you’re looking for a PC controller.

The SN30 is compatible with almost all Bluetooth systems, but it is not compatible with the original SNES. You can fix this by purchasing the Retro SNES Receiver from 8Bitdo.

The SN30 Pro is officially compatible with Switch, PC, macOS, Android, Steam and Raspberry Pi.

Best Genesis-Style Controller: Retro-Bit Sega Saturn Wireless Controller

As we mentioned in the best retro wired controller section, the Sega Saturn controller design is best for playing Genesis and Saturn games, thanks to a more refined design but similar layout to the six-button Genesis controller. .

Like the wired Saturn controller we mentioned above, this Retro-Bit Official Sega Saturn Controller is an officially licensed product. It includes a carrying case with two receivers. One fits the original Saturn, and the other is USB.

What really sets the Retro-Bit controllers apart from the competition is the official endorsement from SEGA, which shows how seriously the company took their job when designing these replicas. Many user reviews praise the precision and authenticity of the controllers, with modern materials and improved quality. Given that Genesis games could put a controller through a lot, that’s high praise.

Unfortunately, if you have an original Genesis, it won’t work with it. In that case, you’d better buy the Retro-Bit Genesis Wireless Controller. This controller is compatible with all systems that work with USB controllers, including the Genesis Mini.
